I’m really enjoying the current issue of Lighthouse Journal. Thanks to Editor Sarah Bower for commissioning a new poem too, on the theme of The Accidental. Here’s what she says about Issue 28, Winter 2024, which my new poem appears in:
The accidental. Where to begin? Accidentally? And what does that mean? I could blindfold myself and type at random, perhaps. I could stick a pin in the dictionary and begin with whatever word I impaled. Ali Smith, whose title I have (accidentally?) appropriated, begins her novel The Accidental two pages before the chapter entitled The Beginning, which itself begins mid-sentence. Where to begin? Here is a beginning of sorts.
Issue 28 features brand new-writing from fantastic names and emerging talent, each exploring the impact, circumstance, and results of accidents.
I love what she says about my poem:
‘Heidi Williamson would also like you to work on your own definition
of the accidental. Her ‘Poem without a frame’ invites you to re-arrange its
lines. You can do this systematically if you wish, or you can cut them into
strips, toss them up into the air and see where they land. Consider John
Berger: ‘Between the experience of living a normal life at this moment on
the planet and the public narratives being offered to give a sense to that
life, the empty space, the gap, is enormous.’ Sarah Bower
